Many later games came with their own turbo loaders built in. You could also use a program to save files to cassette in a special format that loaded faster. There were various methods used to speed this up, such as fast loader cartridges, ROM replacements for the C64 and disk drive, etc. Disk loading was slow, tape loading could be excruciatingly slow (like 10-15 minutes or more). A stock C64 was never especially speedy at loading games from disk and tape, so if the emulator is faithfully emulating the loading process, loading the games could take a while. D64 and G64 files are virtual copies of 5.25" floppy disks, which were used on the C64.TAP files are tape images.
